In our area highschool students can go to the local communty college during 11th and 12th grade for free. The community college has a partnership with almost every 4 yr college in our state, so they are able to tell the students what will transfer and what won't. So my son is almost to this point, he will be transferring to a 4 yr program but he has had a job in his field for about a year and they may help with some school, plus he gets a few credits a semester just for working there! If we are careful, I think we can get him through with little to no loans. We hope he can then take advantage of this great housing market for buyers when he is done. You offer great advice! NMKA

Higher Education ... Thoughts, Tips, Money-saving Ideas
by RubaDub inwhile i have a bachelors and advanced degree from a very well-respected university, it makes me cringe when i see what people spend (or think they need to spend) to get a college degree.
having taken a few non-traditional steps to get my education, here's a few thoughts and ideas to think about if your kids are getting to be college age or if you (like many jw's) are thinking about going to college later in life:.

What is a, let's say 12 year old child supposed to do for friends if there is no one their age in their congregation or anywhere near? We live in a rural area and that was true for my children. They really need those intense peer friendships to develop normally. This was a huge factor in my husband and I leaving, our poor kids had no friends. Those rigid parents with their kids dressed in stiff suits, hair combed perfectly walking around with their bookbags were rotten to the core and I didn't want my kids around them. My heart goes out to this child, he isn't supposed to have friends at school and the kids at KH won't hang with him either, shame on his parents for subjecting him to this! NMKA

Since I was a born-in I have no good memories of the past or the good old days. I can only look back in horror that I gave my entire childhood and half of my adulthood to a cult. Is that the devil controlling my thoughts again? I have had a great time the last four years that we have been out........there I go again, so mentally diseased that I can't even trust my own thoughts. LOL NMKA

Is this really a balanced life?
by ShawnS inmy husband who was raised as a witness & has recently considered getting baptised brought home a "personal study schedule".
this study schedule was given to him by an elder and clearly states at the top "do not post to any electronic service such as the internet" - that alone makes me wonder - why are they hiding it??.
anyway, the schedule breaks down every day, clearly states how much time you should be spending reading the bible & jw literature each day through the week.

Hi Shawn, no it is not balanced! I aspired to this craziness for 43 years and it is next to impossible. You are right it does not leave enough time to just sit with your kids or have a lazy day and make breakfast on a Saturday. Next thing you know your children are grown and you have done little but study your watchtower, get ready for meetings and knock on doors. Keep your kiddies away from the whole thing and provide them the normal activities and relaxation they need. NMKA

Gave 5 JW's Something to Think About at a Starbucks Today

while sitting there doing paperwork , what looked like 3 elders on their field service break sat at a table no more than 4 feet from me .

Good job Flipper! I have a friend that moved out of her territory, so when she gets JW's at the door she doesn't even know them. I copied a pile of JW facts for her to drop on them. Maybe just one of them will think about it, you never know. NMKA

More of my story, and need advice

just a refresher, my wife was baptised 4 years ago and mil and fil have been jw's for 40 years, i've never been a jw but am a christian.
about 18 years ago, just 2 years after my wife and i married my wife announced that she wanted to start studying with the jw's.

Do not move near them, MIL sounds like a goofball. It sounds like they have zero financial judgment. Plus if your wife lives near them she'll get sucked in too, probably never want to get a job and become a full time pioneer......no way, stay put! NMKA

I agree with Jamie! He molested you?! Your mother stayed with him ?! They helped an alcoholic get custody of your children?! They don't deserve "any" response from you, no poem or quick one liner. I am a nurse on a psych ward, when we get a psychotic patient in, it is our practice to let them sleep, eat, get illicit substances out of their system and start their psych meds once again. It takes about three days, before we can even "talk" to them because until then they have no base in reality. This is how your parents are......there is no sense in even letting them know you recieved the message. He clearly has no conscience so nothing you can say will cut him or make him think. It is so beneath you to even respond. It may be too late to prosecute him and I am not a legal expert but I would see about blocking him in everyway so that he cannot contact you. NMKA

Does Anyone Know the Reading Level of Society Lit?
by Band on the Run inthe thread on pros of being a jw (not filled with many) led me to wonder if anyone has scientifically assessed the reading level of the average wt, awake, books.
i thought 5th grade but it is a guess.
software exists now to evaluate reading comprehension levels necessary to read documents.

Someone told me once that much of the more recent literature was designed so the average (5th grade level) could read it and the pictures (like in the live forever book and brochere) were abundant so that even an illiterate person could get the gist of the message. I work for a large hospital system and we have to make sure that our patient information and home going instructions are on a 5th grade reading level because unfortunatly that is where most folks are.
